A small team of ENJN participants will be in Istanbul from April 6 to take part in the second Alliance of Civilisations Forum. The team will support the European Commission’s cooperation with the Alliance and the Anna Lindh Foundation at several interventions in the programme and will also feature in a breakfast briefing on the operation of the Euromed media dialogue during the last four years.

The gathering is a high profile political event with Prime Ministers Erdogan and Zapatero rallying support for the work of the Alliance to improve dialogue between cultures across the globe. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will attend and it is reported that there will also be a visit by US President Obama. The EU will be represented by Jan Figel, European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth.

The Forum ‘seeks to address some of the ongoing tensions and divides across cultures and religions, and to examine some of the broader challenges of good governance of cultural diversity in an age of rapidly accelerating globalization’. The official site (www.aocistanbul.org) carries full details of a packed programme (www.aocistanbul.org/program.en) as well as background information on the Alliance. Treat the programme with caution, however, as changes are still being made to running order and detail.
