The ENJN launched its first training session in Malta earlier this month (July 27 to August 1,2008) with a team of reporters from the Middle East delving into the thorny issue of illegal immigration into the crowded island.
Reporters from Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Syria spent the week working on their editing and reporting skills with trainers from the Thomson Foundation, interviewing all the major players on the island to get to the heart of an issue crucial to both the EU and its neighbours.
Malta’s critical situation exposes the conflicts at the heart of EU migration policy. With the second densest population on earth and limited resources Malta is struggling to cope with the influx of immigrants arriving each year from conflict zones in Africa.
Most make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Libya in poorly equipped and over crowded boats. Many die along the way. With a record breaking 2000 migrants expect this year Malta is looking to its EU partners to help shoulder the burden. But questions remain as to how help can be fully delivered when many EU member states are reluctant to coordinate migration policy.
Given free access inside the highly controversial Maltese immigration detention facilities, to the Maltese military, police and Interior Ministry as well as the European Commission and NGO’s, our team produced a series of approachable stories that have already reached large audiences across the Middle East.
