September 22 marked the start of a new phase in the ENJN’s networking and consultation when EU and Mediterranean journalists were joined by media representatives from Eastern ENP states to discuss the development of the process.

Throughout its three year history, the networking has been driven by the wishes of the EU and Mediterranean media at the heart of the consultation. The extension of the process under the ENJN has opened it up to European neighbourhood partners in the East, so the natural response was to invite journalists from those countries to join in the discussions on a new format for networking.

Over two days of talks the EU, Mediterranean and Eastern journalists – mainly senior foreign correspondents - will discuss their work, the media landscapes within which they carry it out, and the broader context of the ENP. They will look for similarities and differences, building a picture of how cooperation between them might be structured. Their conclusions will feed into a strategy for development of the overall networking process.

Whether the result will be full integration of the East into the current process, the development of a parallel process or some other approach, has yet to be determined. The one certain outcome is that media from across the ENP will have met, exchanged views and got to know their neighbours a little better.
