Jordan - EC Delegation News

EU Development Days 22-24 October

This year’s EDD, in Stockholm (22-24 October), falls one month after the G-20 Leaders meeting in Pittsburgh, two weeks after the IMF-World Bank meeting in Istanbul and six weeks before the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Against this backdrop, the 2009 edition will focus on the global response to the economic downturn and climate change, as well as on the challenges of democracy and development.

“European Union is all Ears for Jordan’s arts!”

The 29th of June, the gallery Dar Al Anda was hosting for the 3rd Informal Meeting between Artists and Cultural activists. The Jordanian artists shared ideas on future projects and how they could collaborate as well as to pose questions to the Ministry of Culture and the European Commission Delegation about their respective culture policies. The EC Delegation was invited to present the latest updates on EU cultural policies, talk about advocacy and artists’ collaboration and to answer questions and inquiries.  The European Commission Delegation asked the artists to explain what ideas and strategies they were developing for Jordan’s art.

Consultation on the new National Indicative Programme for 2011-2013

The European Commission has now launched the preparation of the NIP for Jordan for the years 2011-2013. After initial consultations with the Jordanian authorities, civil society organisations, EU Member States and other donors present in Jordan, the European Commission prepared a concept note that presents the European Commission approach and a number of possible areas of intervention.

EU deepens ties with its neighbours and supports their reforms

A policy paper adopted by the European Commission today takes stock of the concrete progress made by partner countries in a great number of areas, from political cooperation to trade, migration and visa facilitation, from energy, transport, research and innovation to students’ and youth mobility . The Commission also identifies areas where further efforts are required, and encourages a targeted and differentiated deepening of relations with select partners that have shown particular ambition and capacity.

The EU calls on children in Jordan to participate in drawing competition on gender equality

For the third year in a row, the European Commission launches an international drawing competition on gender equality on the International Women’s Day the 8th of March 2009. The competition calls on children all over the world to express their vision of gender equality. Two drawings per region will be selected by a jury of European children, and a prize equivalent to €1.000 for each region will be awarded to the winners.

Commission sets out proposals for global pact on climate change at Copenhagen

The EU sets out concrete proposals for action from the EU and the rest of the international community with the aim of limiting the global average temperature rise to less than 2°C above the pre-industrial level. This is seen by many scientists as the threshold beyond which climate change would become far more dangerous, with the risk of irreversible and potentially catastrophic environmental changes.

World and European Day against the Death Penalty

On the Occasion of the World European Day Against Death Penalty 10 October 2008, the EU publishes an annual statement on the death penalty reaffirming its longstanding and firm position against the use of the death penalty in all circumstances. Children’s drawing competition on the theme of gender equality

On 11 March, 2008 the European Union launched a children’s drawing competition to mark the International Women’s Day celebrated on 8 March. The competition is on Gender Equality and covers the Mediterranean, African, Caribbean and Pacific region, Asia and Latin America. It is the second time the EU Delegation organises the contest in Jordan in close cooperation from the Ministry of Education

Introducing the concept of gender equality to young girls and boys is one of the EU’s priorities worldwide. Ambassador Patrick Renauld said “this is an opportunity for children to think, discuss and open up to ideas about gender equality in a very creative way. Children are excellent observers and shall be excellent messengers in their families”
